2nd Week so far, and WHEN is our departure?

Susan here. From a couple of e-mails from Mom & Dad received this week:

Things change, but they don't become much different.

This week we are staying all day at the MTC taking the normal training that is the first week of learning for all missionaries. It is devoted primarily to the "Preach My Gospel" manual. We've had a coupld of devotionals and a Sunday fireside each devoted to a particular aspect of that book. Tonight we heard a little about the process through which it was created. Elder Quentin L. Cook (12) spoke, and told of the first meeting with the First Presidency in which they outlined what the book was to be like. The process was constantly under the scrutiny of the leading councils of the Church. There is no question in our minds about its being an advancement over previous lesson plans, but it requires better preparation to make it work properly. This whole week is devoted to it.

Because we are always here, we get to go to the cafeteria for three meals a day. Tonight, I just had soup and bread. I've had too many big meals earlier this week.

The holiday yesterday caused some delays in the things we have wanted to accomplish this week. We were given a travel itinerary that said we were to leave for Germany next Monday, but we had been given different information before we got here. We've been trying to make contact with the proper people in the Salt Lake Family History Center, and with the Travel office. Both were closed yesterday. During a short break this morning, Pat went to one office, and I to another, and we got them to help us track down the answers to our questions. We both got the same answers about the same time, and we made it back to our class knowing that we actually will be leaving next Monday morning 8 September. We'll have to leave here about 5 in the morning to get there in time.

Therefore, we'll have to do some preparation (packing, etc.) on Saturday. Then we'll be in Church on Sunday with meeting both in the morning and afternoon, and with a fireside in the evening. Then to bed to be able to get up and get on our way. We really hope that this limitation of free time to just a short time on Saturday will not cause us to miss meeting with Bryce and Sandi, but it is sure that we will not be here when Howard and Joyce come later in the week. We will be counting on you coordinating a schedule with the Alaskans for some time on Saturday. We'll have a lot of things that day too, but we'll certainly make time for them, and complete the other stuff in the remaining time.

We sent an email to our German office indicating that we would be traveling according to the original schedule. We were called out of a meeting today to take a phone call from Germany. Pat got the information as I usually can't use the majority of phones. They will be expecting us next Tuesday morning. They have a place for us to live. It is a few miles away from the temple, but one could walk the distance if necessary if one had the time. We will need to drive quite a bit, but gas for official trips will be reimbursed. Our official trips will include travel to where we can provide training. We'll be doing a lot with the Indexing of records to make them available for research.

*Dad finished typing and this is Mom.* Apparently the apartment they have for us was used for senior missionaries previously, but has not been used in the recent future. They said we will have a phone and internet hook-up, so we are excited about that. They aren't sure if the washer and dryer are still in the apartment, so we will have to check that out and see what they want us to do about it. They are excited to see us and we them. Another missionary couple will be at the airport to pick us up and take us and our stuff to our apartment, then in a day or so we will get busy. So we hope to be able to say good-bye here on Saturday and be on our way early next Monday.

So, they really are leaving! This is what they've been working toward for years. Bon Voyage, Mom & Dad! We love you!
