Düsseldorf Ward Building
It was a big building and we were able to set up rooms for the two stations for New FamilySearch training and FamilySearch Indexing.
To the right Elder Howlett is setting up his Indexing classroom.
Richard Walker again taught the classes of New FamilySearch and Elder Grant Howlett again taught the classes of FS Indexing and reading the Old German Script. Most things worked well, again rotating the two classes before and after lunch.
The big problem came when the internet connection did not continue to function.
To the left is one of Richard Walker's New FamilySearch classes.
We had about 12 computers set up in the New FamilySearch class and only two set up for Indexing, but the band width of the building was very small, even though cables had been connected from the internet connection in the Bishop’s office out to the two rooms. It caused much of the teaching to be adapted, but that seems to be the “name of the game” in this work--Adaptation.
In the second class that Elder Howlett taught he came to a critical part where he needed to use the internet to connect to Record Search Pilot in the FamilySearch program and show how that worked.

He could not get any internet connection on either of the two computers we had set up. However, a young man, about 16 years old, in the class had his own computer and a special stick connection which he had used to get into the internet. He was willing to let Elder Howlett connect the projector to his computer and use it show how the Record Search Pilot program worked.

Elder Howlett had the young man work his own computer to do some of the searching on that pilot program, and later on some of the Indexing batches that were being taught. That same young man asked, at the end of the evening, if we could print up 20 of the Youth booklets and send them to him so he could distribute them to the youth of his stake at the Youth temple trip coming up. In the booklets are helps for learning New FamilySearch and Indexing, including pages of examples of Old German Script. He saw the vision of the importance of this work and wants to share it with the youth of his stake, most of whom did not come that day. We were very happy to see this reaction in a young man.
Sister Howlett also had a special help from the Lord that day. At the end of the day when we were all taking down the equipment and putting things away, ready to load our car with all the equipment that we brought, there was a computer which had been locked to one of the tables in the New FamilySearch class. All of the computers that we take to these presentations have special key locks with wire cables on them that we can anchor the computers to the tables and not have to worry about any of them walking away. It seems that even in some Church presentations in the past, a few computers disappeared, so this system of attaching locks on the computers with cables attached to the table legs seems to have remedied this problem.
Here is a picture of several of the computer laptops being set up with locks.
When the locks are attached, the keys to each lock are put into the computer case of the computer to which they are attached. All of the computers were unlocked but this one particular computer. Elder Howlett had search through the case two or three times, and Sister Howlett again searched through the case three times, but to no avail. So she began looking through all the other cases thinking the keys had been placed in the wrong case. But that didn’t bring up any result. Finally she knew Heavenly Father knew where the keys were, so she prayed to the Lord to ask His help in finding this key. We couldn’t proceed with the “take down” and let the Stake people put their table away until we could unlock that computer. As soon as she finished praying the thought came to go look again through the case in which the computer belongs, and this time look for small keys since the lock on this computer was a smaller lock than the others. She searched through every part of the case and finally found the keys down in a small corner. It enabled us to finish the “take down” quickly, but also testified to Sister Howlett and others of the truth of the Lord answering our prayers when we need help. But we must ask in faith and also remember to thank Him immediately when He does help us. We know the Lord answers prayers, sometimes it takes a while to get the answer, and sometimes the answer comes immediately, as in the situation for Sister Howlett that day. We are truly blessed.
